  • Floating Raft Hydroponics Update Dec 2012

I've started a second crop of lettuce in the floating raft setup. The non-aerated side is well underway, and looking great. I'm planting more lettuce and greens in the actual floating side. As for any algae issues, the non-aerated side was perfect, no algae at all. On the floating side, I did have a bit of algae between the rafts where I didn't have a tight fit. Pushing the rafts closer together and covering the gaps on the edges should resolve that problem. Here's a link to the fertilizer I use : http://youtu.be/vYv9iu2NI3M Also, I recently talked about building an Aquaponics greenhouse. But before I do that, I need to do a test run so I can work out the kinks and make sure I have a workable system. I finally found 2 good IBC containers and will be using them as my experimental setup.

How to clean fish pond without filter Hi guys it's Mark Wilson your pond man and today's question is :- How to remove algae from pond without harming fish So what we are doing on this garden pond is a full drain and clean. We have actually pumped out all of the pond water into holding vats and then we've basically taken the fish out and kept them in the mature pond water. This is the safest way to look after your fish when removing algae or diluting algae from a fish pond. The fish are not harmed as they always stay in the existing pond water. So they're not basically going into sterile city water conditions or not going into a brand-new water ...

In 1998, he moved to NASA Ames Research Center, where he established the Protein Nanotechnology Group. These researchers focus on building nanostructures using biomolecules from extremophiles-organisms adapted to extreme environments, such as high temperatures, high or low pH, ionizing radiation, or saturated salts. Using these robust biomolecules, and manipulating molecular recognition and self-assembly with genetic engineering, his team has built patterned nano-particle arrays for data storage and molecular scaffolds for enhancing enzyme activities. In addition to working at NASA, Trent was appointed Adjunct Professor in the Dept. of Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2004. Two years later, he was awarded the prestigious Nano50 award for Innovation in Nanotechnology, and was elected Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences. Since then, Trent has initiated Global Research into Energy and the Environment at NASA (GREEN) with support from Google. Among other projects, Trent and the GREEN team are developing systems for producing a sustainable, carbon-neutral feedstock for the biofuels of the future. Trent's recent research and inventions are focused on methods for obtaining alternative fuels, processing municipal wastewater, and economically producing freshwater by desalination. In April 2009, he organized and led an international conference in Denmark entitled: Wind, Sea, and Algae. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/research/2009/jonathan_trent.html http://www.youtube.com/user/AlwaysOnVideos http://www.youtube.com/user/AlwaysOnVideos Jonathan Trent, OMEGA Project Scientist, Bioengineering Branch, NASA Ames Research Center : AlwaysOn GoingGreenSV 2012 Keynote

The second step is the pond water flows through a large bag of bio-balls which allow good bacteria to collect and grow. The third filtration process is a series of varying density filter pads which grab floating sediment. The final and most effective filtering stage is a 37 watt ultra violet (UV) bulb which burns off and kills the floating algae. I can almost guarantee that if you set up your filtering process this way algae and green pond water will be a thing of the past. Share this video: https://youtu.be/U9GI8YOyq6c

It might seem surprising, but algae is one of the most powerful sources of energy we have access to on Earth. When dried algae is ground into a powder and refined, oil can be extracted from it. The result is nearly identical to traditional gasoline, but with far more benefits. Dave Hazlebeck, CEO of Global Algae Innovations, gave Seeker a tour of his algae farm in Kauai, Hawaii, and explained how his company is revolutionizing sustainable energy. "The fuel that we're producing is exactly the same in terms of performance as gasoline or diesel or jet, it's just a lot cleaner. I think the big difference is that [with] all the other biofuels, you're growing it and you're just getting biofuel. In this case, for every gallon of biofuel you get 10 pounds of food with it," Hazlebeck said. Hazlebeck believes his company is on the path to completely change the way we currently produce both oil and food. Not only can algae create biofuel, it can also be used to create animal feed. Currently, most animal and fish feed is made from corn or soy, which both use more water and energy to grow than algae. "There's studies that show with algae grown to replace animal feed, you could actually solve global warming to a large extent," Hazlebeck told Seeker. Algae can be used to create food for humans as well. New Wave Foods in Northern California created fake shrimp made from algae and other plants that actually looks, smells and even tastes like real shrimp. Because it's made from algae, the shrimp substitute also has the added benefit of being low in fat and extremely rich in nutrients, something that corn and soy are severely lacking. Growing algae for oil and food could also significantly reduce deforestation. According to Scientific American, the yields from algae are far more significant than crops like corn or soy. If all the fuel in the country was replaced with biofuel from corn, we would need a facility three times the size of the continental U.S. to produce it. But for algae, we would need a facility the size of Maryland. Additionally, algae can produce 40 times more food per acre than traditional crops. While showing the Seeker team around GAI's Hawaii facility, Hazlebeck explained that the algae farm is next to a power plant, which puts it in a very unique position. "[It] allows us to capture carbon dioxide and avoid that discharge and reuse it, and that prevents it from going into the atmosphere and causing global warming," he said. "If every power plant had an algae farm next to it, it could potentially solve the global warming issue entirely." The environmental benefits of algae are impressive, and because algae can grow in both freshwater and seawater, it's also very easy to produce. So, does that mean we'll all be filling our cars with algae gas at the pumps very soon? Not just yet. Hazlebeck and his team have run into a few setbacks since they began scaling up their operations. The most prohibitive issue has been the cost. When Global Algae Innovations began, a gallon of oil produced from algae was about $30 a gallon -- 10 times higher than it needs to be to work as a viable alternative to fossil fuel. But Hazlebeck and his team didn't give up, and they've continued to come up with solutions to decrease the cost. As of now, they almost have algae oil down to only $2 - $3 a gallon. Once GAI can get their algae production up to scale, Hazlebeck believes it will change the geopolitics of the world. "A lot of the reasons we have wars are because of fights over resources or the need for more resources. By creating a more equitable distribution with countries being able to make their own, it should lead to a more stable and peaceful world," he told Seeker. That's really the point of it all for Hazlebeck and GAI. They don't want to be the only company doing this; they want everyone working together because they truly believe using algae as a fuel and food source will change the world. The Floating Algae System Technology, or F.A.S.T. system, was developed as an integrated component of the Aqua-Sphere floating fish production system. The system uses the effluent water from the fish production to grow any variety of micro or macro algae. Large plastic tubing or "socks" float in the water so no land is required. The system is ideally suited for fresh or salt water applications.

Koi Pond is about a year old. It has seem a significant amount of algae growth in its short life time. Mainly in the summer time and this pond has seen two summers so far. Algae growth began with algae string, algae clouds and then eventually floating algae. Pond already setup with UV filter with Sand & Gravel filter.

In this video we look at how to remove algae from a garden pond without harming the pond fish. This pond does not have a filter or pump!!! So they're not basically going into sterile city water conditions or not going into a brand-new water quality or water chemistry different to there current system. So we're basically taking out all the fishpond water to make sure they are kept (the fish that is) in the original pond water. Then we can basically get rid of all of the pond sludge and we're cleaning the pond out as part of our pond algae solutions. We are getting rid of all of the sludge as this is what causes green algae in ponds. Once the pond is clean and we have removed all the algae feeding pond waste. Then we put the fish back into the pond again in the original water and then top up with conditioned tap water. So this is how to remove lots of the single celled algae and its food (green water) and that is 100% the best way to remove algae or even dilute the algae within a fish pond. If you have a pond with no filter then doing a full drain and clean to get rid of all of that organic load and 50% of the green water at any one time. If you've got a big filter system and you haven't got all of that organic load inside the pond. Then your filtration system can filter out the waste and any clumped algae, so that's another safe way to remove algae food and the dead free floating algae. On this particular pond we've got no filtration at all there's not even any plants in at moment that's why we've got so much algae. So the safest way to remove the algae without harming the fish, let's say for instance you just wanted to pump all of this green water away. Some of the new people that contact us here at Any Pond Limited just tell us or ask us to get rid of all the green water. They say Mark pump it all the way to waste and just fill it full of nice clean tap water so we can start again from fresh. Even if you put in all the tap water conditioners and everything that we can get as pond professionals or treatments from the your local retail centres. You with only have more problems down the line. But i have done it for years just empty it and then we'll put the fish back in and thats how to get rid of algae in pond and we'll have a lovely gin clear pond water no problem. Well heres just a word of warning, that is doing a 100-percent water change, that's a bad bad so BAD way, in fact that's a sterilisation service and you shouldn't put fish in for at least four to six weeks after that type of pond cleaning service. So the safest way to remove green water is to do a dilution, but no more than fifty percent at ant one time so it's not a case of taking out all the water, not even seventy percent of the water. We always recommend keep as much water as you possibly can but mechanically remove the organic waste and then add plants to fight the algae so you don’t have to get rid of the algae in your pond. Thanks for watching see in the next video. The best way to remove algae without harming the pond fish.
